MANIFESTO
Roma.
volta diverso." (Salvatore Settis, Futuro del classico).
Recuperare e riportare in vita

THE ALWAYS CLASSIC MANIFESTO
“every art and
philosophy has probably been repeatedly developed to the utmost and has
perished again.”
Aristotle (Metaphisic 12.1074b)
Reviving the Classics is a
constant in every century in order to make them topical and in contrast with
the moderns; the Renaissance is the proof of how this allows development and
progress. Indeed, doing like the Ancients is in order to understand them
thoroughly, relive the experiences and repropose their teaching.
Beyond this proven and productive
deed, the most important question to ask is how are we sure that the
"classic" we search and intend to repropose is authentic and not a
revival of something previous? The "classic" in our society is never
been the same. It is changed depending on the vogues or the archaeological or
aesthetic passing convictions, and recognized definitely in a style of ancient
Greece or some other times of ancient Rome. The turning point in neoclassicism
at the beginning of twentieth century is just in bringing the fundamental
references of these styles and using them freely like tesserae suitable to be
added everywhere within the mosaic.
My proposal is to open the
discussion that even the ancient Greeks and Romans actually had copyed someone
else. Peculiarity of Classics whose we can be sure is that they repeat
cyclically; therefore what we consider the ancient Greeks and Romans, could be
a revival of something else started by them observing their own previous
history. Perhaps, about this we’ll never able to be certain, but it is a
consideration allowing to confirm that the cyclical rebirth of the classic is
the "rhythmic form" of the Western tradition (Ernst Howald).
Retrieving and reviving the
antiquity is also dictated by the spur and the purpose to propose and confirm
again its values and all of the antiquity is able to evoke and the present
requires. Then, we can assert the artist goes to the ancient because he\she
finds here a certainty on the processing of his\her works; the artist will feel
at ease when a such confidence is acquired, without inhibitions, so that
basically the "classic" and the reuse can be seen as a pretext, a
clean sheet for starting again. The recovery of the "classic" is like
a vicious circle.
The only way to stop this
"rhythmic form" of the "classic" is to produce art using
materials and supports incapable to preserve forever, as unable to leave traces
findable still future. This certainly will not cause the destruction of the
"classic" because it would be impossible in the sense the "classic"
is rooted in our culture and we must know how to recognize it, but will drive
the artist to compare oneself and the society with the present time, which
becomes the history.
An example is my project ALL
ROME. It is an illegible video, except for the sequences that I digitalize
frame by frame, as a result of a deterioration of the tapes caused by a burial
of the cassettes, lasted more than one year. The film is a documentary of the
monuments of Rome, the major symbols of classicism that I brought to light as
an archaeological excavation. The pictures are so many images, exhibited only
after to have been dismantled and rebuilt; fragments of a banal narrative shown
by broken or confused runs.
Like an everyday life object,
which the archaeologist discovers underground and gives a meaning while
observes the degeneration on its surface carried out by the natural phenomena,
the same way my images get to the public after a slow intense activity and
deterioration.
